Literacy
We are using the WONDERS ELA curriculum!
I am VERY excited about the opportunities to grow your readers and writers using this terrific curriculum.
We also work in amazing trade books: independently, in small group, and in book clubs!
Readers are more than a level, a number or a code. Good readers are constantly growing and need to have a foundation for their choices in text. We will deepen our understandings around close reading and annotating text to prepare for discussions and fun learning projects!
Growing comprehension skills and higher order thinking is supremely important for our students' success, reading is not a race through "levels". Therefore, your students will not know what "level" they are reading at, they are not asked to know these demarcations, they are asked to master the skill of selecting texts that fit them at a given point in time. The following charts are useful to parents and educators as we work to grow our readers. General academic expectations for 3rd grade is that students will finish the year independently reading around an "P/Q", we'll talk more about this at Back to School Night and in our Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Your support at home with monthly reading logs and goals ensure that your student is growing to their fullest potential. We really are a team. Reading with your child, having your student read aloud TO you, and modeling your love of reading is a tremendously powerful thing!
Falling IN LOVE with reading is the surest path to greater proficiency.
Thank you for all you do in service of this great goal!
