Conferences and Progress Reports
We have parent / teacher conferences twice a year (November and February). All parents are expected to attend. The dates for the conferences will be announced as we get closer. These conferences are planned to discuss your child's progress and to offer ideas on helping your child succeed. These are a great chance to ask questions as well. Please try to make these meetings. If you ever feel the need to meet with us outside of these times, let us know and we can schedule a time.
Progress Reports will go home twice a year, usually in January and in June.
Please feel free to contact us if you are ever concerned with your child's progress, and we will make sure to do the same.

Homework Expectations
Reading: 25-30 minutes every night.Your child will have a reading goal each month (total minutes).
If they meet their goal they will earn various rewards throughout the year.
I know that life is busy and that every night is not always possible, but most nights please encourage their reading success. Reading aloud to your student is also encouraged, having them read aloud to you is what we ask you to record for their growth!
Math: Mr. Maestas will provide tasks many days that you can use to see what your student is learning and keep at home.

Behavior
"Bucketfilling" philosophy that is important to our classroom community.
The premise is simple, we each have an invisible bucket and we fill it with our own good work, and with our care of those around us. You can help "fill" the bucket of someone else by being nice to them, and you certainly "dip" into their bucket through unkind actions or words. It is a powerful program for kids and families, check it out: bucketfillers101

Falcon Funds and the "Nest"
"JES Falcons SOAR!" is the motto at Jackson Elementary School. Your student has the opportunity to earn Falcon Funds for exhibiting these good behaviors: (S=Safe, O=On time, A=Always Respectful, R=Responsible) Once your students has earned 5 Falcon Funds, they can go to the "Nest" (our store within our school) and buy a prize! We visit the Nest fairly often...and later in the year students have the opportunity to spend their Funds on a variety of things in the "Sheafor Store" including flexible seating or a visit to the Pirate's Treasure Box or pool their funds into a classwide reward!
Snacks
Our classroom has a morning snack time. Students should bring their own snacks or enjoy a USDA provided fruit of the day.
They should not require utensils or if they do you will need to send them with your student.
Healthy snacks are preferred. Candy, chocolate, and chips are not allowed during snack time.
These items may certainly be part of their lunch, but not for snack time, please.
Great ideas for snacks: granola bars, goldfish, graham crackers, veggies, fruits, trail mix, pretzels, yogurt, etc.

Classroom Celebrations
3 major celebrations mark our calendar year school wide: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. If you are interested in helping out during these times, please let us know. It would be terrific to have your energy!
Halloween: We put on our costumes late in the afternoon and participate in a parade around the town square (weather permitting) ending in a party back in our classroom that afternoon. Please send costumes in a labeled bag that your child can change into later in the school day.
Christmas and Hanukkah: We usually celebrate with an International Luncheon. Each child will sign up to bring something to share that is significant to their family heritage. It is fun for families and kids to get together and try some amazing food from other cultures!
Valentine's Day: A Valentine Box contest, Valentine exchange. Please make sure to include a Valentine for everyone (We'll send home lists of names for you to use!)
Legacy Books
Students are welcome to donate "Legacy Books" to our classroom at anytime. Students who donate a book to our library will get to sign the inside cover of the book, and will be a part of the classroom library long after they leave our classroom!
Field Trips
We have some AMAZING field trips in 3rd grade that support our curriculum.
They vary from year to year and more information will be coming soon.
Our work is greatly enhanced by our association with Grand Teton National Park, pARTners and the
National Museum of Wildlife Art in addition to our own Jackson Hole Children's Museum and Wyoming Stargazing

PLEASE contact us if you would like to bring in treats so that we can plan accordingly. Birthday invitations are not permitted to be given out at school unless you are planning on inviting the whole class. Thank you for understanding and for communicating ahead of time.
If Your Child is Sick ...
If your child is sick. PLEASE keep them home. Sending them to school is not only difficult for them, but you are putting other children at risk. We will have no problem sending them back home if we feel they are at risk and / or putting others at risk.
THIS IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN THE COVID-19 ERA. Please respect the fact that we are all in the same health pod together and this will work best if we honor each others' health and well being by being cautious.

The big 5
As the weather transitions to cooler temperatures please note your child's needs for appropriate outerwear.
When we reach deep autumn, winter, and certainly often into our mountain spring ... your child will need to come to school wearing the "BIG 5".
Coat, snowpants, boots, hat, and gloves = The BIG 5
Please LABEL all clothing - Our Lost and Found gets very full by the end of the winter!
Typically, unless the temperature goes below 0 degrees F, we go outside for recess---therefore, the Big 5 is VERY important!

scholastic book orders
This year our class will be ordering books from Scholastic Book Clubs! A few times throughout the year I'll send home a flyer filled with affordable books just right for your child's age and reading level. Kids read more when they choose their own books, so I encourage you to let your child help make selections.
You might remember flipping through the Scholastic flyer when you were in school, eagerly circling your choices, and handing the form to the teacher. Your kids can do the same, but you can also order books online, which is simple, convenient, and saves time. Please see the message from Scholastic below to learn how to order online and how it benefits our classroom.
ONLINE IS EASIEST:
When you order online, you get thousands more books to choose from, including favorite authors and series, plus exclusive editions of the hottest new books.
Every order placed online earns rewards for your child's classroom. Every time you order a book from Scholastic, you are helping our classroom earn "points" to buy additional books for our classroom library! :)
You pay with a credit card on our secure Web site, saving time for you and your child's teacher.
To start ordering online, follow these simple steps:
1. REGISTER at Scholastic Book Clubs' secure Web site (www.scholastic.com/bookclubs), and create your own User Name and Password.
2. ENTER the onetime Class Activation Code above to link you to your child's classroom and teacher recommendations.
Our Class Code: MC3XD
3. BROWSE the wide selection of books with your child.
4. PAY safely and securely for your selections using your credit card.
5. SEND the order to your child's teacher online, and watch your child get excited to read!
*Please feel free to order by bringing back a form and check. Whatever works best for you is what works best for our kids!
